Introduction

The US federal tax system has seven marginal brackets, and most Americans also pay state income tax on top. With the standard deduction at $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married filing jointly in 2026, most taxpayers no longer itemize โ€” but knowing which bracket your income falls into is still essential for planning bonuses, Roth conversions, and investment timing. These calculators cover the full picture.

Tips for US Taxpayers

Remember that the US uses marginal rates โ€” being in the 22% bracket doesn't mean you pay 22% on all income, only on income within that bracket. The effective tax rate for most middle-income Americans is significantly lower than their marginal rate. Maximize pre-tax 401(k) contributions to reduce your taxable income; every $1,000 contributed saves $220 in federal tax if you're in the 22% bracket, plus state income tax savings.

Check federal, state and payroll treatment separately

A federal estimate is not a complete US tax result. Filing status, dependents, deductions, credits, state and local rules, and payroll withholding can all change the answer. Use a planning estimate to prepare questions, then check current IRS guidance and the rules for the state that applies.

  • Use your filing status and the relevant tax year.
  • Do not treat a federal estimate as a state or local tax calculation.
  • Compare withholding with a recent pay stub before changing a W-4.
